Sustainable British charcoal from local woods

Working in woodland with a chainsaw. clearing fallen tree to establish coppice stools

Who we are

Most of the Charcoal used in the UK is imported.

This is damaging

to critical endangered forests and environments, as well as the impact of transporting cargo thousands of miles and exploiting of local people.

The UK has under utilised

woods and woodlands and, coupled with coppicing practices can dramatically improve flora and fauna of native species.

Thus, the idea of Local Charcoal was born

with the aim to produce quality charcoal using local woods and using it in new and effective way's

We are a small family business which sources local wood to make quality charcoal.

Where we are

Based in South Yorkshire, our kilns are within local woodland and are used as part of woodland management plans

What we do

We are restoring neglected woodland where we cut and store our logs on site..

We use a retort  kiln for a clean and efficient burn and are passionate about charcoal uses other than just for BBQ's.

Pyrolysis

To change wood into charcoal, a process called Pyrolysis is needed

At 340 degrees centigrade, wood releases wood gases and volatile oils

In our retort kiln - the wood gasses are released into the burn chamber, producing minimal smoke whilst the kiln temperature increases to 600 degrees

The logs are now being converted to charcoal
